Furniture Jungle was established in 1917 by Larry Harris and Monty Vaschon. They opened the first store in Cleveland and grew from there, establishing an additional 17 throughout Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. While we have expanded our business to the tri-state area, we remain small minded. Today, three generations later, Furniture Jungle is still a family business, run by Jerry Harris and Monty Vaschon III and also employing their children: the great-grandchildren of the original owners.
For nearly 100 years, our family has provided well-built, quality furniture to the people of the North East United States. It all started with our grandfathers Larry and Monty, selling furniture from the back of a horse-drawn flat-bed. Now, we're proud to say that a 4th generation continues the tradition.
Our numbers reveal much of our history:
- In 92 years, the Furniture Jungle team has grown from 2 employees to over 1,000 employees. In the next few years, Furniture Jungle will double in size, in both volume and employees.
- An average furniture store turns over its inventory 1-2 times per year. At Furniture Jungle, we turn over inventory 13 times per year.
- Whereas a typical furniture store is promotion- and sales-oriented, Furniture Jungle has "under prices" and no sales.
- The Von Dyke and Mondrian stores each have a 550-car parking lot. On an average weekend day, more than 3,000 people visit the store.
- Although most retailers spend approximately 7% for marketing and advertising, Furniture Jungle spends about 2%.
- As of 2004, Furniture Jungle has 4 stores with over 100,000 square feet of retail space. Furniture Jungle attracts record numbers of guests each week. We now sell more furniture per square foot than any other furniture retailer in the country. And, we make sure to give back to the community, making philanthropy a cornerstone of our business.
